A Letter from the Founder of E.W. King Communications
Dear client or prospective client,
I've seen it all in my 20 years in the business and from many different perspectives.
I've been the beat reporter on deadline looking for the story. I've been the editor assigning the reporter while pulling my hair out creating the content for a magazine that had to meet the objectives of its owners while balancing editorial integrity. I've been the interviewer and the interviewee. My work has taken me from a daily newspaper to a private urban college. I've had to create, formulate and pitch the pitch to the media and I have been on the receiving end of a pitch too.
I've worked on Madison Avenue for some of the largest companies in the world and had to take my non-profit, small budget experience and apply it with ammendments on the very street that symbolizes marketing and media. I've been taken into confidence by CEO's, CFO's and COO's along with EVP's, SVP's and VP's---all relying on me for advice, ideas, guidance and assistance. My career path has also taken me back to my home state of New Jersey to serve a wide array of clients representing global corporations with major brand names to middle market companies striving to grow and small, entrepreneurial companies just beginning their journies who were looking for help and understanding.
A good portion of those 20 years has been spent in 'public relations'--that all-inclusive title that is often used incorrectly and just as incorrectly understood. I've worked at very large firms and boutique agencies. I've represented them and their clients and have been on the receiving end of their efforts and communications. Overall, the diversity and depth of my experience provides me and therefore my clients with an unique perspective and collective understanding of media, public relations and corporate communications.
E.W. King Communications is a strategic communications practice that offers the individual client the individual skills and support methods it needs. This may include public relations or it may not. It could require foundational marketing or it could simply demand corporate identity work. Regardless, the keyword is communications.
Too often, public relations firms offer clients a one-way street....down the wrong way....for the client.
Over the years, I've cringed at the things I've seen in public relations going all the way back to my reporting days. My practice brings back practicality for business. I know I couldn't stand the majority of pr firms if I was a business owner looking for help. I really don't care about how many awards a firm has won. I am really turned off by a firm touting what a great place they are to work at and what a fun bunch of swell folks they are too! I know many business owners have been burned by past experiences. They're promised experienced support that will focus on their account and then get kids who can barely focus ten minutes. Instead of media relations, they get 'artists' more preoccupied with using your time and money to get nominated for an industry award by offering the avant-garde. And let's not forgot all those slick, cute, gimmicky firms that throw all the bells and whistles when all you really care about are results. You're not IBM or Coca-Cola and you're not interested in being the guinea pig for a pr firm to do it's own pr by using you.
In essence, E.W. King Communications is the antithesis of the typical 'pr' experience so often encountered today because we concentrate on what is important to you. Real ideas. Real perspectives. Real people. Real work. In addition to the services and experience I offer clients, I've put together a team of veterans who have expertise in various skills if needed. Our formula is simple. We assess the situation, identify what it is we believe you need and work on what you need. We also offer a wide scope of services that may be individually needed or a client may need a broad package of services which we also provide.
Either way, E.W. King Communications' offers clients a path to Message, Strategy and Execution for Success.
Sincerely,
Gene King
Disturbing comments for common 'pr' types
You've had a vision for your business. You know what needs to be accomplished. You know what you want to say and how you want your company and its services perceived.
You have something special to offer. Unique enough to make a mark of your own.
But translating that into an effective communications strategy is a challenge. Integrating and executing the public relations and media relations process into a marketing progam is just not your focus.
You need to focus on the business.
You're wary of 'pr' and rightly so. You've spoken to firms who want to make you into something you're not or sell you what you do not need. You've met pr firms that are self-absorbed, promising the world, filled with kids or frustrated artists all looking to accomplish more for themselves than for you.
And then there's all the bells and whistles. Fancy offices. Fancy websites. The awards. A cast of 100. Big talk. Big Hype.
Big Deal.
Just more reasons for the spinmeisters to spin themselves...right into your wallet.
We can focus on the strategy that will help your business grow and make sure it's designed for you.
After all, you need to mind your own business to grow it.
E.W King Communications can be the trusted advisor you need.
